Liquids mode – Urine separation
Situation – Designed primarily for use in household situations, although it would be suited to cabins and low use facilities.
It is then installed directly onto a bathroom floor.
Operation – Prior to use there is a lever to open the bottom tank. The urine filter is stainless steel and directs urine away to a reservoir. There is no mechanical operation in the solids area below..
The bin is filled and then left outside to compost for 1 – 2 years and another bin used to replace it.
Capacity – 5 – 10 person weeks per bucket. Unlimited with multiple buckets are used.
A remote composting facility could be used to reduce the buckets needed.
Design – The square design sits on the floor with a bin below and stainless steel urine separator at the front with an anti splash-back filter pad.
The urine is directed to a reservoir for disposal.
A step is used to access the toilet as it is slightly raised,
A lever operated to expose the bin when in use.
A venting system is installed with a fan.
For venting and aeration, the toilet has been designed to replace a flush toilet using the waste pipe/closet flange as a vent pipe along with installation of a low voltage fan.,
If a new installation with no waste, then a standard venting system can be installed.
Construction – The top section of the toilet is a one-piece fiberglass bonded to 3/4″ PVC sheet or epoxy coated plywood.
The solids bin is an Injection molded HDPE stack and nest tote with lid. Gray, red, or beige.
Toilet seat gasket – Pressure sensitive adhesive air cushioned neoprene foam.
Inner door closure handle – white oak, epoxy sealed.

Options Available – An optional Flush Toilet Interchange Kit: allows the dry toilet to be installed in the place of an existing flush toilet, using the existing closet flange for venting. No holes in walls or ceiling are then required. (The CTD can be reverted back to a flush toilet easily).
The system is also available in custom colors, with epoxied wood top optional as well..
Greywater Solution – A greywater solution is not available with the system.

Summary – The Cotuit Composting Toilet is a hand crafted composting toilet that has been designed to fit into an existing bathroom and replace a flush toilet and use the original waste vent pipe as a new air vent for the composting toilet.
The system is urine diverting so it captures the urine for use or disposal.
Solids go into a bucket for which is capped when full and left to compost for up to 2 years depending on the temperature of the composting location.
It fits onto the floor, so installation is easy, although some additional work is required for the urine drain and if a new venting system is needed to be installed.
