SYSTEM

Binlet composting sanitation system

System Type – Dry – Compact – Remote Composting

Liquids mode – Liquids in with solids

Situation – Domestic to outbuilding situation..

Operation – The toilet is used with the addition of bacteria solution that degrades the deposits as well as organic material to cover the deposits.. The bins are replaced when full and the lid placed on top and left for 8 – 10 weeks. Further thermophilic composting would be required where a number of systems are operating.

Capacity – The Binlet is a simple batch system where bins are replaced after 4 – 5 months (average family) and then retention time of 8 – 10 weeks. The fast turn around is the result of the bacteria powder that is added to the composting pile.

Design – The system comprises a 120 liter black bin that is buried in a sleeve in the ground such that the top is at the level of a toilet.
The “converter” is the main component manufactured for the system and it sits on top of the bucket and has a seat and a venting point at the back that is attached to a vent pipe going up through the roof.
Bacteria is added to the bucket to aid decomposition.
The design is a batch design, so a new, empty  bucket is used when the existing bucket is full.  The bucket has a lockable lid to allow it to be secured while it is left aside to decompose.

Construction – The components are made of heavy duty plastic.

Certifications – Approved by “The South African Institute for Medical Research”. Listed in the National Sanitation Task Team’s ‘White Paper on Basic Household Sanitation’ as an approved method of human excreta disposal.

Energy Use – There are no energy requirements to run the system.

System Includes – The system consists of the following;
– Two black 120 litre containers with lockable lids
– A pit liner
– A convertor
– Toilet flap assembly
– A PVC vent pipe
– A collar and flytrap for the vent pipe
– 250g of special bacteria
– Vent Pipe holder

Greywater Solution – Greywater is not treated with the system, do alternative system is required.

Installations – It has been in use since 1993 with hundreds of installations.

Summary – The Binlett system is installed directly into a hole dug to give the right height for the toilet seat. The in ground plastic liner allows the 120l bin to be removed for pre-composting and an empty container replacing it. The seat and pedestal are sanitary plastic. The system composting is accelerated with bacterial powder added. A passive ventilation system enhances drying and reduces odours.

The system is a simple batch system where bins are replaced after 4 – 5 months (average family) and then retention time of 8 – 10 weeks. The fast turn around is claimed to be the result of the bacteria powder that is added to the composting pile.
